You cannot withdraw cash from shares, you can only SELL them and receive the proceeds.

Were/are the shares held with a managing company?

If that account is still active, log in and see what is in there?

How was the surprise dividend sent to you?

Eligibility for dividends depends on whether you held the shares at the ex-dividend date- this can often be weeks or even months before payment.

With that said, you mention you withdrew sold the shares last year, this would be an unusually long time.

Who held the shares for you? If it's a platform do you still have access, it would be useful check any dividend statements or at least to confirm the dates.

As to your second question, if you sold the shares then no you obviously don't still own them (if only!). That's not to say you may not have accidently only sold part of the shares, or something else.

    Know what you don't

Which company? In recent years a number have gone through demergers so you may have sold e.g., shares in Prudential but you may still own shares in M&G plc and Jackson Financial Inc..

Alternatively it could just be your broker only just got around to distributing it to you or you sold your shares but had already qualified for a scrip dividend and so you still have a few. You need to contact your broker/platform.
