Understanding my September 2026 bill and the April Gov Price Cap

I’m trying to understand my latest bill. For context, I signed up for a new fixed tariff in April and am billed monthly.

My latest bill includes the note: “On this statement you will see reversed charges; this is where we have recalculated some of your previous charges.”

All of the reversed charges relate to gas. Why are there no reversed electricity charges? I also cannot see any reversed charges on previous bills dating back to April.

This bill shows gas charges going back to 12 April in the Charges section, but I already paid gas charges on my April to August bills. I’m trying to understand why only gas charges have been reversed and why those earlier gas charges are appearing again.

I’d appreciate any insight into what I might be missing.

Were any of the original gas charges based on estimated meter readings?

No, always had a smart meter which reports every 30 minutes

one of tge reversed charges and new charges agree exactly - dates and £8.07.

The others dont match in time - so without start end readings and unit rates / SCs applied to those readings - its difficult to advise.

You might think your meter is reporting, but 1/2hourly is likely irrelevent to gas billing - and just because electric 1/2 hourly readings were being used for a smart tariff or refund scheme etc - doesnt mean gas readings were being used correctly.

Its not abnormal for suppliers to mess up linking one or both meters in dual fuel homes smart meter readings to customer accounts - often running until customers spot and complain.

So check now - whether new charges reflect true gas meter readings.

if do dont worry about it.

maybe the gas account only linked from 3rd Sep to cover out of phase billing periods - 3rd/4th sep rather than old regular 11th/12th etc.

Or did you maybe phone in readings around the 3rd or have a meter reader inspection visit ?

Or another possibility - did your supplier just miss some days smart data before recovering on 3rd (but that more likely only to impact one billing period)

Other suppliers produce unexpected mid month billing when get a new reading (after maybe missing n days of smart) others like EOn seem to take more care and back read meters on missing days and dont issue weird interim billing (in some cases even delaying bills until have real data).

check past monthly statement amounts for real or estimated readings.

  • It might also be that nothing has changed. They sent me a mid month bill in August that reversed four months of bills (ie back to April too). Freephase Dynamic bills show usage/cost each 30 mins so I went through each day on the old and new bills and the entire difference for those four months was… nothing. All figures exactly the same. So they did all that just to bill for the 15 days usage since the last normal bill.
