The modifications mentioned were needed for meters that weren't communicating with the supplier. So not needed in your case.

You can see your usage in the Octopus app or your account on the web. When you say you can't read your meter, what have you actually tried? Most are pretty straightforward but some models require button pressing to show the reading. Instructions should be fairly easy to find, but if you post up the model or a clear photo then someone will be able to help ..

    @Qyburn

I'm 88 even f I knew which button to press to get display to wake up on the Gas meter can't lie on floor to do it.

With all this modern technology it is a shame the readout on kitchen work top does not give the numbers.

I was going to leave Octopus but new supplier wated actual reading from me, so I'm stuck.

To be fair, when I had my mechanical and digital dumb meters there were very few variables that could go wrong. I never had to call or email my supplier a single time over a twenty odd year period, However, since I got my smart meter, I can't keep track of the number of times I've had to call and chase my supplier due to things that have gone wrong with either the meter, the IHD or the tariff. It must have been well over twenty or thirty times to get things resolved.

Is there a model number on the back of your kitchen display?

My mother has gas and electricity smart meters and a Chamelion 3 in house display that Octopus provided.

We can get the gas and electricity readings on the display by :

Firstly pressing the button with the zigzag electricity and gas logo next to each other to select electricity or gas.(Marked No 8 on the picture below.)

Then press the button marked "OK" and scrolling through the options using the arrow keys until you see "meter information". Then press the OK button again. The display should then show the meter reading for gas or electricity depending which one you selected in the first step.

Not sure if a similar option exists on other in house displays.

I had them fitted 2 years ago ish, treat them as old ones. IHD never worked not did these apps, so just left them. Not changed my lifestyle, if I want to cook food in oven or watch TV all day on my day off i will.

It works 2 ways, suppliers should give compensation for smart meters that dont work (from posts here) including IHD

The benefit of the modern smart meter mean that you can phone your current supplier and they are able to provide the readings for you. Martin Lewis has raised the issue the some customers should be automatically put on the best tariff, but that is another thread off course.

I understand that new technology is not for everyone and paper bills are helpful. But smart meter and paper bills are not mutually exclusive.

Normal moving the smart meter display to a convenient location is preferable to laying on the floor,

Companies have targets to meet to fit new meters. They have a right to fit a new meter at any time, but you can continue to say no thanks. if it really does have to be changed there is a legal process for them to go through to gain access.

If smart meter roll out had been done properly from day one the reluctance to change wouldn't have been as strong. I've had meters changed years ago, you get a note, they changed it and the world carried on. When they changed them for meters which didn't work as intended it caused distrust which takes a long time to turn around.

If you don't want one keep refusing.
