Does EDF Care About Electric Car Use?
We have a solar / battery set up.
When I've been with previous suppliers on a "electric car" tariff, there hasn't been any checks to see whether I actually have one and it was a well known allowance that people with batteries could use those tariffs.
I'm looking at EDFs Go Electric tariff at the moment. Slightly more expensive than I pay now (well, by 10p!) but way loads cheaper at night (by 20p!). My current supplier doesn't have any TOU / EV tariffs for me as I can't currently switch my export.
If I sign up, will they know I don't have an electric car?

According to their website it is exclusive to EV owners. I would imagine it would not be too difficult for them to tell from your paten of usage that you are not charging an EV.

Well if you charge your battery within the low rate window then how would if it's a car battery or a Solar battery. E-ON's app breakdown suggests my battery charging at 2am is the cooker being used.

To smart charge your car with edf it needs to be linked via the app, so they will know you are not charging a car. That said, the tariff terms only say you need to own an EV, not that you have to charge it, so they might not be bothered....

Typically a "granny charger" will run at 2.4 kW (10 A) and a wall box charger at 7 kW. Any other charging rate might prompt suspicions.

Cannot some EVs be set to charge at a lower rate, the idea being this might be gentler on the battery?

I don't know about changing the speed in the EV, but my charger is set to 22A (about 5kW).
I'm not worried about the battery. It can handle that sort of power easily. In my case, Renault cheaped out on a plug and socket in the charging circuit, and they can burn out after a few years if charged at 32A single phase all the time.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -

They don't seem too hot on checking eligibilty for things even when they have all the data in front of them. I asked them if I was eligible for the low standing charge trial since I couldn't find the limits on their site and they immediately put me on it. The same reply contained the limits and I'm approaching the upper limit already after a few (summer) months with them, clearly not eligible and yet running all the way to the bank with my £6.25
