Adult son moving home and UC bedroom entitlement

Hello,

My adult son who is 23 is potentially moving into my home, he is currently living with his father but needs to move in with me as he doesn't drive and needs to be near a station for a new job. I currently rent and am the only person on the tenancy, I have a 19 year who works and a 17 year old doing A Levels. I get the child element of UC for the 17 year old and the housing element. The housing is for a 3 bed based on the 3 bed LHA. My question is that if my 23 year old moves in, I know my UC will be reduced by the £95 per month that they deduct, but will my UC LHA go up? if so what evidence do they need that he has moved in. As I can't provide this until he is actually here as it will be bank statements etc etc. At the moment my home is only possibility as I am to the wall financially so I need to be very clear about what the impact will be before I do this. Has anyone on here had a similar situation and might be able to help?

Thanks in advance

I've looked at the rules and it suggests your LHA should be based on 4 bedrooms if your adult son moves in. A non-dependents housing cost contribution of £96.55 per month will then be applied.

Any council tax support you receive may also be affected.

You don't say whether UC covers your full private sector rent or not at the moment.

If your UC claim does not already cover the full rent, then yes the UC Housing will increase as now the 4 bed LHA rate would be applicable when your 23rd old moves in, less the no dependent housing costs contribution amount.

You could use an online benefits calculator such as Entitledto to check revised UC calculation.

  • Thank you both - I rent privately. In terms of proof does anyone know what they would require? Obviously as it hasn’t yet happened his address is not here?!

When you report your 23rd old living at the address they won't ask for proof at that time. But at any time in the future, UC or any other official organisation could request proof, so it would be wise to document that your 23rd is living at the address. I.e. your 23rd old registers on electoral register, registers his Bank account at address,
