£1 premium bond

this is true. We found some of late mums. Dad had just kept them so I cashed them in (had to send in death certificate). They reimbursed the value but deducted £25 for a prize cheque they said had been cashed more than twelve months after mum died. Dad couldn’t remember doing that but as it was over twenty years since mum had died we just took their word that it had happened

Surely that can't have been possible unless your dad had never informed the bank that she had passed as there would not have been an account to pay it into.

you may not recall the days when you could practically just cash a check at the bank or pay it into any account or cash it at the post office or a shop set up just for cashing cheques. And I use term cheque loosely from memory. it could have been a payable order, they just said the prize had been cashed and i only mentioned it as issue if premium bonds in a deceased persons name need to be cashed in long after someone has passed away
