Pet Insurance
So I received my renewal quote today from PDSA for £309 (up from £238 last year), no claims for my 9 year old dog, I have been with PDSA for many years and expected an increase due to his age and that other people would have claims effecting the operating cost of PDSA
But then I thought lets do a comparison (like for like cover), I checked everything twice and hit the submit, the quotes ranged from £108 but the exact same cover from PDSA on the comparison site was £168
I have contacted them asking for an explanation and will turn off the auto renew but wondered about this, is the norm with Pet insurance

Perhaps you could try buying the cheaper PDSA policy as a new customer and see if it recognises you as an existing customer.

The difference may well be that the renewal quote will cover existing conditions (including any that you may have claimed for).
The new customer quotes will likely exclude any claims arising from existing conditions.

Good point.

New customer discounts basically, insurance discounted to get new customers effectively cross funded by people who renew. The practice was banned for Home and Motor but not for other classes of business. Generally they taper off the discount rather than removing it at the first renewal so the burden on others is greater than simply just the new business.
With any form of health insurance you have the added complication of "pre-existing" which will be simply excluded under the new policy but covered on the old one which may contribute to the pricing difference too.

Just an update, we have never had a claim so no pre existing conditions.
I will be looking at going for the new PDSA quote of £168 even though we could go for a lower amount with another provider, main reason is we are happy with PDSA customer/claim service as we have claimed on another policy for our second dog.

Even if you've never had any claims, anything you've discussed with a Vet would be deemed as pre existing for a brand new policy .
