Switching energy supplier

Switching your energy supplier isn't always seamless. I recently switched from EDF to Fuse. As I was nearly £400 in credit with EDF I was looking forward to my refund. EDF say it can take up 6 weeks to provide a final bill. I waited 20 days and heard nothing from EDF, not even a sorry you are leaving email. When I rang them, a helpful young man explained that EDF had received a final gas reading from Fuse but no electricity reading which was why they hadn't produced a final bill. Fortunately I had the final electricity reading to hand and a final bill was sent and the money should be in my account in 3 to 5 days. What I learned was you cannot take for granted that your new supplier will supply the old supplier with the final readings and if you don't take the initiative yourself you might end up paying your direct debit for electricity or gas to both suppliers. EDF had taken £155 from my account 5 days after the switch. It left me thinking how much money do these energy companies have swishing around in their accounts because unsuspecting customers haven't chased up their credits and the energy companies can't be bothered to inform the customer that there is an issue with their switch? Always keep a record of your final readings and chase up the energy company if it is taking too long with the refund.
