JD Williams Account Created under my Name - Fraud
I wonder if someone could assist me with this. Today I received a letter from Lowell I believe they are debt collector on behalf of "JD Williams". I have been living at my property for over 5 years and never heard their name before.
On this letter there is my name spelt wrong however they have asked me to contact to clear balance I owe with JD Willaims. Now part of my brain is thinking how is this even possible that someone got hold of my name (incorrect spelling) used my other details and obtained credit or made some shopping. Is this even possible?
Secondly I regularly check my credit files with Experian and can see my score is average without any issues. How on earth is even possible for someone to obtain credit without soft or hard search. I have checked multiple credit reference agencies and i have no outstanding credit.
Please can someone guide me what I should be doing in this case.
If I ring JD Williams and provide them my correct details including DOB will this be an issue or will they cooperate.
Thanks

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along soon, but from what I gather this is a sort of Catch 22 situation as if you say that it's not you who opened the account, but someone pretending to be you, then they won't give you any information about the account due to Data Protection Laws.
JD Williams do appear to have a specific Fraud team so I'd suggest speaking to them.

it's quite likely a fishing expedition by the debt collectors and they have pulled your name out of a hat because it matches the name on the account that they have been unable to track down. If there is no open or defaulted account with jd Williams on your credit report then that's likely.

Just send them a denial of liability letter
Don't give them any more details than you need to
I'd be tempted to put something like
"The name of the debtor is John Smith, my name is Johan Smythe and you have incorrectly associated their debt with me. I have never had an account at JD Williams and I have lived at my address for X years which will verify this account is not mine"
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
