I just requested an isolator was fitted when I ordered my smart meter from Octopus. Cost nothing.

Had a few consumer units changed at various houses and the electrician always pulled the supply fuse out to do the job and resealed it, last time a few years ago (during Covid so maybe different rules) and that was with a smart meter. Got the black input box so probably original 1950's. Missed the opportunity to have an isolator switch when I had the smart meter fitted, though, so that was a pity, although I imagine it would encourage DIY electricians to play around with the consumer unit.

I bought an isolator ready to ask my EDF smart meter installer to fit it, but he had one of his own and fitted that without any prompting from me 🙂

I've still got the one I bought here somewhere …

Yes, the Eon fitter had one on his van, but was happy to instal my one, which was exactly the same!

I asked the Eon fitter if he could fit one as I was intending to get an EV so he went back to the van and got one. He also jiggled things about to leave maximum room on the backboard.

Never associate with idiots on their own level, because, being an intelligent man, you'll try to deal with them on their level - and on their level they'll beat you every time.

Being hated by idiots is the price you pay for not being one of them.

There was a time IIRC when at least some DNOs would do a fuse upgrade and iirc if needed de-looping for free - if the reason was "green" like an EV charger or ASHP power draw.

Presumably thats no longer the case since you have had them visit / survey ?

And if not - well there are options - many dumb EV chargers can by set to lower powers - like say 50% - or get a smarter one with a total home current clamp - youll get 7kW when rest of house taking next to nothing - and protected if your using a low of power otherwise.

EOn fitted mine for free - then removed them for free (when the space was needed for a 4 port multirate+external Proteus contactor for restricted feed) - unfortunately.
