How I wish that were too. Unfortunately, they still have adverts and BBC podcasts are littered with them. Annoys me every time there is an advert when I'm paying £14.95 a month for the privilege.

The only people who don't watch adverts? The pirates downloading things for free.

The first DVD I ever bought (The Devil's Advocate) is still fine after 28 years. Plays great and I really haven't stored it in anything like perfect conditions. It's moved around with me about 7 times since I bought it and has spent many months in a carboard box in the shed/loft.

How long DVDs will last has been long debated, and it depends a lot on the quality of the making of the DVD hence the issues with Warner Bros when they made disks on the cheap that were routinely failing after 10-15 years. Most seem to say 30-75 years but I've disks that are fine after 25 years and I've a couple that failed after 10 years.

If you've owned it for 28 years you must have the first pressing released in November 1998 in which case it seems you missed the opportunity to cash in for having the uncensored version. The second edition removed the Ex Nihilo knock off from the final scene after they lost a law suit. First pressing were going for over £100 at one point but unfortunately now are £10 but thats still favourable over the 50p a second or later pressing goes for.

How interesting. I had no idea that it was worth that sort of money at some point. I did sell my Blues Brothers DVD for £50 a few years ago as for some reason that was really sort after - I don't know why. I don't think I would have sold it anyway as I now how over 4000 DVDs/Blurays and that one is in the pride of place at the front of the 1st shelf. It actually has cut out tokens in it that I presume you could maybe get freebies if you collected so many.

Yes, you are right that I bought it in 1998 for my Creative DVD/Soundblaster soundcard combo player for my PC. I then bought a Samsung 709 DVD player in 1999 for £250. For some reason I always remember these things.

I can imagine some pirate versions have adverts on them, but I have many friends who have their own Plex servers and never watch any adverts on anything they download - though I don't know where they get them from. It's not something I agree with, however, these same people do subscribe to Sky and Netflix etc but like to have things on plex which are not available anywhere for any price. I am going out with some friends at the weekend so it will be interesting on what they make of the 33% rise of their Netflix (funnily they have the one that you get adverts with.

I subscribed to Netflix when I was on an extended stay in latin america, declared my address as UK, paying with a UK card but they bill be in peso not GBP. Our price went up in April to £16 for the premium option, so favourable to the £21 the UK now is.

used to have a desktop which ran as a Plex server but mine mainly had DVD/Bluray rips rather than outright pirated content. Then ran into two problems, no reader for UHD BluRay that works with a Mac and my ancient desktop died and wasnt replaced

We’ve kept a dvd/blue-ray player around for years. There are some films and series that just don’t end up on streaming services and we bought them on dvd/blu-ray years ago. Having got fed up with films/audiobooks disappearing off streaming services and multiple providers and their costs I’ve started buying second hand dvds/blu-rays and cds and put some on my birthday/Christmas lists! One of my friends has just bought a new cd player and dvd player too.

We subscribe to a few streamers (need to cancel a couple TBH, barely use them) but I still like DVDs. I have quite a few that I keep and re-watch occasionally, but others are just passing through.

I rent DVDs & Blu-Rays through the post from Cinema Paradiso - I moved over to them as soon as Am**on bought Lovefilm. They've got a good range of recent stuff, old classics, world cinema, obscure indie films and lots of TV series. It also saves you the endless indecisive scroll of choosing what to watch - I only have to pick from the 2-3 discs sat in front of me.

I also treat charity shops (and CEX) like Blockbuster (RIP) - pick up a film for £1-2, watch and then re-donate. I quite like the random nature of what you find there. A friend gave me a few bags of DVDs to donate, and I admit that a couple are on a diversion via my shelves.

We currently use my partner's Xbox to play discs but I'm tempted to pick up a DVD player in case that goes kaput.

Get a PS4 from CEX. You can play Blu-rays on that too.

I started using Cinema Paradiso for DVD rentals after Lovefilm was discontinued. The prices have gone up a bit in recent times, but I guess thats understandable with the increased postage costs especially 1st class post.

I like the range of rentals that they have on offer and I'll occasionally get requests from my elderly parents to get hold of a disc for them rather than subscribe to a streaming service to watch something.
