@camelot1001 when I had my allotment we bought a tall upright freezer by BEKO for produce, as it was low-temperature suitable for garages etc (it was kept in what was the old o/s loo!).

Yorks lass when I started work that’s what was in the shop to put the money in are you being served comes to mind we were just talking about it yesterday the day I went for my interview it was pouring down and there was 6 of us waiting I was told later I got the job because I was the only one with clean shoes my dad was a stickler for polishing your shoes

Izzy - Yes, just like Grace Brothers! My Dad was the shoe polisher in our house too and, back in the 50s and 60s, was a dab hand at simple shoe repairs like sticking on new soles and the metal segs in heels. Nowadays shoes don't need much of a clean other than a wipe over with a cloth but I still have a shoe polishing box with tins of polish, brushes and cloths that does see the light of day now and again. 😁

YL that took me back a long time! We had what passed as a very small department store (I think it was called Direct Store) and it had those money shutes that disappeared into the depths of the shop somewhere, returning with the correct change in it. As a child it fascinated me and it was my dream to work in that shop when I left school, just so I could use that machine! Sadly it didn't happen as, by then, the store had closed down and became Woolworths, with no shutes!

TA - Ah, the department stores of yesteryear! I know we have the likes of John Lewis, Harvey Nicks etc here in Leeds but they're not a patch on the long gone ones like Lewis's, Marshall & Snelgrove, Schofields etc. When my cousin left school she worked for many happy years at Schofields on the handbag & ladies accessories department where they used the money chutes. And yes, there was a staff hierarchy just like Grace Bros!

I can remember going into Fenwicks, Binns and Bainbridges in Newcastle as a child, and even when we moved to Cheshire in 1975 the Co-op department store had the tube system. I think the Beamish Co-op store has them now.
