The welcome letter clearly states change of supplier. Moving to variable then out used to work but don't know if that has been tested recently.

Yes, I think Eon Next still have this 'loophole' to avoid early exit fees. Most other suppliers, if not all the others, who also used to have the same loophole have since closed it, so no knowing if Eon Next will close theirs soon. I guess it depends on how many people (ab)use it.

If anyone was thinking of switching to the Next Fixed 12m Exclusive v8 tariff on MSE they have confirmed an internal exit fee is in place.

Who has confirmed it ? According to the written contract information Eon have given me it clearly only states change of supplier.
