Can connect to Argos by wi-fi but not via LAN.

My broadband is with virginmedia and I have come across a problem which has left me baffled.

I have a desktop which is connected to broadband via ethernet from a vm router. When I try to load www.argos.co.uk my browser comes up with the following error message

Access Denied

You don't have permission to access "http://www.argos.co.uk/" on this server.

It does this with firefox, chrome and opera even after cookies have been cleared. I thought OK maybe argos don't like my i.p. address but I can get to the argos site from my phone when it is connected to the router via wi-fi. This only happens with the argos website. How is this possible?

Do you have a VPN running on the desktop? A third-party security product?

I had issues with one website, it turned out that my VPN, when running but not connected also incorporated a pop-up blocker which stopped the site loading.

Disabling the VPN extension completely in Chrome settings sorted the problem.

errors.edgesuite.net "Access Denied" message means Akamai, a major Content Delivery Network (CDN) protecting that website, has blocked your connection or flagged your IP address as suspicious.

I get a similar message sometimes when I try to use the argos search facility. Mine happens when I'm out and about (on EE), but works fine at home.

It could be the VM servers blocking it, try changing your desktop network adapter settings to use a public DNS setting, either Google Preferred 8.8.8.8 / Alternate 8.8.4.4 or Cloudflare Preferred 1.1.1.1 / Alternate 1.0.0.1

Turn off IPv6 for now at least.

Under Network & Internet look for "DNS server assignment" and change from automatic to manual and then restart the browser.

(assuming no VPN or third party anti-virus) I'd first try flushing your dns, restart your router, open a browser incognito mode (or disable all your extensions) and then try.

I'd be curious if it continues happening after that.

I tried both the google and then cloudfare settings and saw that on the first attempt afterwards argos loaded but then started denying later attempts. So it worked once and then stopped working.

Can you explain how I could flush the d.n.s and is icognito mode the same as opening a private browser window?

Open command prompt (easiest way is holding the windows key and pressing R to open the run window, and then type in cmd and press enter).

Then type in 'ipconfig /flushdns' (without quote marks) and press enter. You can then close it.

Sorry yes I was referring to Incognito in Chrome, but whatever the private equivalent is for whichever browser you are using.

Also don't forget to turn router off and on, I know it's annoying that it's always recommended and most people skip it because it usually doesn't solve the issue, but its for ruling things out (in particular this is to get a new IP address lease from Virgin, which gives you a clean state with the websites filter).
