Everything @Hammer56 says about auctions is true. If anything it is generous to auction houses - these days buyers premium is often well over 30%.

But do bear in mind that a coin dealer has to make a profit too. So if he would expect to sell a coin for £100 then he is not going to pay you £100 for it.

One thing you can and should do with any coin is check the silver weight and work out the spot price for silver. You might expect to sell for about 5% under spot. But these days spot is high so maybe they'd reasonably offer a lot less.

Then you need to look up your coin online and see if it is anything special - you would not want to sell a Gothic Crown for 5% under spot for example. That is why I suggested asking specialist auction houses if anything you have is worth putting into an auction. Auctions do attract a wide audience - sometimes worldwide. And if more than one person is interested in your coin that can make a great difference to the price you raise.

It really depends on what you mean by 'what's the best way........'.

Id consider that the best way would be the easiest way, so I'd take them to a billion dealer and get them to buy them from you. I'd use somewhere like Hatton Garden Metals Ltd. Payment into your bank account same day, job done, move onto the next job.

Thanks for that, I will just add that Google Lens (the camera icon in the search bar of the Google app) is astonishingly good at identifying all manner of things, I have found it brilliant with 19th and early 20th coins and stamps.
