How far can I ask for the carers allowance to be back dated.

I am on a State Pension. I have Cared for my son through out my working carer and continue to support him now I am getting my state pension. We recently found out I could get carers benefit and he has successfully applied and I receive it.

I was unaware I could apply all this time and the extra money helps as he still lives at home as an adult.

Can I ask for consideration of a backdated payment. and for how far back.
