Pet Insurance

I have 4 cats at the moment just realised 2 of them were not insured. I pay £75 for the other 2 this is due to my 12 yr old cat Charlie who has had some claims in the past for urinalysis tract blockages. He had cover of £4000 which has now been used for this. Is it possible to switch to another company to get him fully covered and what companies do you recommend for the best pet insurance.

You won’t get full cover for an animal with a pre-existing condition. Any pre-existing conditions will be excluded when you move to a different insurer.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have not could of.

As above, due to his age and history, you will struggle to find an insurer to cover him for pre existing conditions. For this reason, whilst they're not cheap, I have always had lifetime policies, that will continue to pay out year after year if they have an ongoing condition. The amount they'll pay out renews annually.

We use Petplan, as both vets we've been with are happy to be paid directly by them for big bills, rather than us paying out and claiming back, as they know Petplan are reliable. Again, not a cheap option, but we certainly made our money back with our previous dog who had years of treatment for arthritis, including regular hydrotherapy and laser therapy.

Petplan and Agria tend to have higher premiums but they do not increase your premiums if you make a claim.

Premiums will increase each year due to rising costs but if you have two animals of the same breed and age and have claimed for one of them their premiums will still be the same.

However, if you do not need to claim then a cheaper policy suffices.
But you won’t know whether you will need to claim or not , so it is what price do you put on peace of mind.

The alternative is to have a pot of money set aside for vet fees and hope it is enough or be able to use a credit card or get a loan.

lifetime cover with reinstated vet fees each new policy year is always advisable.
