@cozyhomer it is always difficult to determine what weight should be given to answers supplied by anonymous contributors to an OP's thread.

However in the case of all matters related to Scottish probate/ confirmation process and procedure, @buddy9 is the only demonstrable 'expert' on the matter.

Indeed, my own observation of the intricate detail in which he deals with the multitude of queries he has handled, suggests he is either a retired or active professional practitioner.

No one else I have seen try to comment on issues related to the mechanics of Scottish estate practice and procedure come close.

Accordingly, do not be distracted by any other responses that appear to contradict or confuse.

Hopefully the many Scots who have been assisted by @buddy9 can attest to this characterisation of his competence.

But i live in Manchester and i cannot afford to get to Dundee and deliver in person. If Commissary staff at Dundee Sheriff Court is the same as Edinburgh Sheriff court never answer the phone. What do i do then?.

Well one option would be to employ a (Scottish) solicitor to act on your behalf. Applying for probate in Scotland is a much more complicated process than in England, in your case once you are appointed Executrix-Dative you would then have to apply for Confirmation before you can inherit (as the sole beneficiary of your late mother's estate). Using a solicitor would cost you money but save you a lot of time and trouble.

@poseidon1 is correct, @buddy9 is the expert on doing it yourself so you should give credence to what they say and ignore me if you find my comments conflicting. Perhaps you will find that the staff at Dundee Sheriff Court are much better at answering the phone than those in Edinburgh?

And if poseidon1 is confirming buddy9's excellence, you know you are accessing knowledge and skill generally only available at a financial cost. poseidon1 has their own specialty which they share freely, as well.

buddy9 has made available to commoners the exquisitely nuanced responses needed to obtain confirmation DIY. The language needed is esoteric and requires unusual precision.

As a part Scot with experience of both systems, those in England and Wales have no idea how much more difficult the Scottish system is.

I'm a bit further up the Cross Country rail network but can get returns to Edinburgh for £60 ish. Generally, it's much cheaper to get a cheap ticket to Edinburgh or Glasgow and book onward separately. When I'm travelling north I've found direct bookings to Inverness (or north) and Aberdeen much more expensive than 2 tickets.

Also check the basic Edinburgh to Dundee Scotrail ticket as a base line.

@cozyhomer , I take a keen interest in applications to be appointed executor or executrix dative because I have tried to do this twice and not yet succeeded. At my first attempt I failed because I did not correctly describe my relationship to the deceased, a somewhat distant relative. My second attempt is stalled whilst I gather documents as proof of information that was omitted from their Death Certificate; I still don't know if I have got the wording right this time. But as @buddy9 is the acknowledged expert, I should probably have kept quiet here and not passed comment; sorry. I am very pleased that you sorted out what you need to do at this stage and I hope things go smoothly for you.
