Is my understanding correct that if I fail to declare some pre-existing conditions and don't upgrade the cover for them, I remain covered for everything else, unrelated to these conditions, e.g. delays, lost baggage, unrelated injuries etc.?

    …

….I did send them an online request, but don't hold my breath.

A reply from Nationwide FlexPlus Team ( nationwidetravel@aviva.com ) to the above question:

"You are correct. Without a valid Pre-existing Medical Conditions Upgrade in place, there will be no cover provided for any incidents as a result of, or in connection to any known pre-existing conditions.

Claims for travel disruptions, lost baggage etc may be considered, given they weren't in connection to any pre-existing medical conditions which have not been disclosed."

I have recently declared a pre-existing condition for the same cover - 2 knee replacements in the past 12 months. They charged me a fee of £30. When I wanted to add a further pre-existing condition, having snapped the tendon in my finger, they told me that the £30 covers ALL pre-existing conditions for the policy year and didn't want to be informed about any others. It depends on your reason for not wanting to disclose but I thought I got good value.

Should try the Co-op account only costs £12 a month

And there ia a list of conditions that you don't have to declare

I found Avia wanting to charge and AXA didn't

Many wouldnt be comfortable with the "may be"

As per the original answer, there are the two considerations of what the full instructions are and the practicality that they arent going to be paying for a GP report when you claim for a lost baggage or delayed departure. That said, if you were to call to report your lost baggage and say that your chemo is making your more forgetful and you havent declared your cancer then it may trigger further investigations.

In my claims days a significant proportion of declined claims arent due to super sleuthing or fancy voice stress technology but instead the policyholder simply tells you information that they "forgot" to mention when buying the policy.

I've called them previously re existing conditions. Declared the issue and declined the upgrade but they confirmed I was covered for anything apart from that condition. I guess the problem comes if something might be related and you're then arguing whether you are covered or not.

Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I certainly wouldn't be comfortable with being told 'may be considered'.

If I'm paying for insurance (and I always do), I want to know I'm covered.

Co-op travel insurance ends at 80th birthday, that's where Aviva have the advantage age wise, their cover is based on medical conditions.

The problem is the statement could be read in two ways… the more positive one is that simply a non-declared condition wouldnt impact any other claim and the uncertainty is only just the general "uncertainty" - ie you are only covered for delay if its over 12 hours so if you put in a claim for 11 hour delay it will be declined but that is unrelated to the medical condition.

As its written however it could also be read that the undeclared condition could or could not impact the another claim.

When I was shopping around for travel insurance last year, Nationwide wanted something like £180 to cover my and Mrs QrizB's pre-existing conditions while I could get a standalone annual policy that covered them for £140.

So I didn't bother changing my FlexAccount into a FlexPlus!

It's a shame they don't have some sort of no claims bonus for pre existing conditions. I've had some for decades and never claimed anything.
