Second degree student loan

Hello,

We are in England and talking about a university in England. Youngest went to uni at 18 and did a 4 year degree. Finished this summer (aged 22). Youngest has decided to go back and do a second (bachelors) degree in a health-related subject. The degree is on the list on which you can get second degree funding.

My query is, is the student loan for the second degree based on parental income (like the first one was) or is it based on the 22 year old student’s income?

They have not lived at home in the last 4 years as lived permanently in student accommodation 52 weeks a year but student loans were all based on parental income.

The general rule is he would need to be 25 by the start of the course to be considered an independent student. To prove otherwise he would need to prove he has earned for himself sufficient income or received benefits to manage without any financial support from his parents during the last 3 years. This also excludes any Student loan. So unless he can show he hasn’t touched his student loan it is unlikely to be possible.

Yep, the rules have been tweaked but the basic rule has always been that for independent funding a student needs to demonstrate complete self support in the previous 3 years.

And he'd need to know exactly when that 3 years began. One week living at home post A Level study (not results) can delay meeting the requirement by a year.
