Bought iPad from Costco- they didn’t charge me for Apple care
they forgot to charge me for AppleCare.
is it just the same to buy AppleCare online!

That sounds like they didnt sell you the AppleCare rather than didnt charge you (which would mean that you got it free of charge so wouldnt need to buy it online)
If its AppleCare then in principle the only thing a retailer can do is change the price. Certainly some retailers may try to sell you their own warranty instead of AppleCare. Note that Apple Care comes as three options, standard, plus theft/loss and multi-device

I rang them they said it was done in error and I’d need to go back in today which id rather not do, if I can avoid it. If it’s exactly tne same to buy it from apple in line, it would be easier to do that

If they didn't charge you and you don't have Apple Care then…..
You can start an AppleCare+ or AppleCare One plan when buying a new product with Apple in person, online or through the Apple Store app.
From here https://www.apple.com/uk/applecare/
Things that are different: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid2 -
For the first few weeks after purchase, you can even buy it through Settings. It will appear as an option under your Apple ID on the settings homepage.
