my dad got scammed by roofers
my dad 86 - was told there was a plant growing out of his chimney
he went and looked - they said they would re point and remove the plant for £400 - they went on the roof for a while - he said he would pay with a check - they said they would VAT then can he not do it by card - they took his card outside(yes hes an idiot) and wrote down all the details - next thing £2500 was taken out of his account !!!!!!!! the bank have been fab NAT WEST he got it back on the next day - but today they came back and got in the house so i rang the police from work and as soon as the flashing blue lights were in the street they quickly left

I think it was the scammers who finished up getting conned - the bank lifted all the money from their account and gave it back to dad!

Excellent result. Tell your dad he needs to call you in future before agreeing any work from anyone who knocks on his door. See if any neighbours can look out for each other too. Stopped a couple of chancers like this when I was working on renovating dilapidated property by backing up neighbours who started asking questions when guys knocked on doors and vulnerable old people agreed to work. It often starts with a silly cheap offer - clean out all gutters for £25 - a true bargain - but as soon as ladder is up they discover work needed that costs hundreds, usually the replacement of a £2 gutter joint or something. Turn nasty pretty quick too.
