Mature student with a lump sum coming

At the minute I get the full loan plus grants (means tested) for Lone Parent/childcare for an additional £4000.

Thing is, my gran died last year and Mum and Dad have finally sorted out the will and they haven't told me exactly what I've got - but it's between £10-15,000. Mum is hanging onto the miney in her savings account and getting interest/paying tax on it and is quite happy to do this until I finally graduate, occasionally helping me out with the odd cash payment from it, if this is what I want.

I know this isn't legal from a tax and grant point of view but is there any other way around this - I really need the grants as Housing Benefit hasn't been decided upon yet but Income Support etc have all been cut off and I am still waiting for a decision on Child Tax Credit as well.

Also if my mum hangs onto it, it will stop me getting my mucky paws on it and spending it all!

Any advice?

  • It would perhaps have been better if your parents had inherited the money and had then given you some gifts as and when it was a good time to do so. Nobody would as far as I can see be bending the rules.
