Out of the blue ... "Can we have a chat?"

How would you feel if you received a FB message from an old work friend, 20 years after you left?

Bit weird, isn't it? If you want to reconnect with old friends, it's an odd wording to use. When is "a chat" ever good news!!?

I've bumped into them in town since leaving and said hello etc, but not for about 4 years now.

I can only think that it's going to bring some drama to my door.

I've ignored for now.

But my mind's in overdrive...do they need me to provide an alibi for some ancient crime, or are they going to blackmail me for some past embarrassing hen weekend shenanigans 😇

It feels like a trap...like being asked "are you free on Sunday?" 😉

Whyyyyy.

I've had those sort of messages from people whose accounts have been hijacked. You are right to be suspicious if that's all it says.

I think it's from a genuine person, who first asked how I am, by name.

If it was worded differently, I probably would have answered.

Like "hi, long time no see. I'm hoping to organise a works reunion, would you be interested?" Type thing...not "can we have a chat". That just sounds odd.

Sounds like I'm right to be cautious.

I'm not FB friends with them.

People doing Alcoholics Anonymous sometimes reach out to people they think they've offended or mistreated in the past, as some sort of atonement ritual. It can be a bit weird.

it’s a scam, it isn’t your old friend it will be a scammer who is going to ask you for a favour, ie money.

I get a run of them, 3 or 4 over a few days, then nothing for weeks.

We should all talk and chat more. We have really close friends and just colleagues; perhaps he liked you more than you were friends with him.

I had an old work colleague contact me on Facebook, I had seen her before, but I didn't recognise her. Now I could see her name, I recognised her, the contact has gone cold again, but it was just a message.
