Replacing windows 10 laptop

Thanks that is a good recommendation and I will use it for a shortlist if I ever get around to getting a new laptop, I went to Currys and started turning them all over and they were not impressed. If you have an Acer model I would be grateful so I can look on YouTube for videos on repairing it.
I don't know about Trigger but like the source, mine just works and so I end up using it. I did look at an 18" laptop and was tempted by a Cheap Chinese one at around £260 but Acer definitely sounds like a better bet.

I occasionally see people say things like:
- I'm still using Windows 7
- I don't allow Windows security updates
- I use other (unnamed) security tools
- I'm sure my PC has never been hacked.
Can I ask how they know they've not been hacked? What are these security tools that work so well? What is their advantage over Windows updates? Is this hubris, or is there something sensible underlying it?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?3 -
@monius: you should reread the first sentence of the OP's original post. In the right circumstances your advice might well be helpful, but this OP needs a simple solution requiring minimum tech know-how. Your solution is not it.

Are there threads about updating 8.1 to 10 after the deadline? I was unable to clear enough space on my 32GB laptop at the time, and have even less now so will need to do a clean install (64 bit machine marked as compatible with Windows 10). I know there are YT tutorials but I'm bound to have questions because nothing I ever do tech-wise is plain sailing.

@nottsphil you will need to start your own thread on this matter to get better advice.
32gb?
Hard drive or memory?
Start your own thread for starters.

The key thing to remember about Linux is that if you do not like a part of the OS you can swap it out.
I do not like systemd, which is a combination of not liking the way it runs syslogs and handles date / time and other things, and a principled objection to its entire ethos. I can swap it out for sysv init or something else but doing so is a prodigious amount of faff.

Probably install linux instead. 32GB storage not enough for Win. How much RAM does it has?
