Finding a pension - endless dead ends
I worked at a prison for a couple of years, and I have payslips that show I was paying into a pension during that time. Part way through the employment the contract was taken over by a new company.
I have two employee record numbers for this time.
The first employer has now gone, they were taken over by another company. I have asked that company if they can help me trace my pension. They say their records show it was part of the LGPS, but they have no records and no other information. The LGPS want to know which government area it came under. But I do not know this.
The second employer say they have no record but try asking the council, but are not sure which one would deal with it.
I am in the process of writing to the council closest to the newer employer but feel I am chasing down corridors here.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Contact the LGPS office for the council area the prison is located in.

Do you know how long you were working there and how long in the pension scheme?? If it was less than 2 years you may very well have had a refund on contributions. If it was a long time back (1970s? 80s?) you may have needed more than 2 years service to have retained a vested interest in the scheme.

Are you sure it was LGPS and not CSPS ?

Both prison guards and admin staff would have been in the CSPS. But other jobs - such as cleaning and catering - could have been outsourced, which could explain the change of employer/contract.
OP - what exactly did you do? And when?

When you say a couple of years, was that deffinately at least 2 years. If it was less you will not have qualified for a pension.

Might not have earned enough for the pension 😁
In the UK, prisoner pay rates are set at a minimum of £4.00 per week for employed inmates, with standard weekly earnings typically averaging between £9.60 and £20.00 depending on the job, location, and incentive level. These rates are exempt from the National Minimum Wage

OP has said they were employed at a prison. Inmates aren't classed as employees.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!2 -
OP states in the first post that he has payslips showing he paid into a pension.

Isn't the much-touted and long-in-gestation Pensions Dashboard open for business very shortly? Anyone know how comprehensive this is likely to be and whether it will be of help to this poster?
