no claims discount query

I bought a second car in Sept 2023. It seems as if you start from scratch regarding NCD with a second vehicle. So my question is, now that it is Sept 2026 should that mean I have three years NCD associated with this vehicle?

Can't see why not, but looking for advice/info.

Also am I able to protect this or does it need to be a certain number of years before that becomes an option

Thanks

It is a bit messy, you have two set of NCD running. You can get confirmation letter from the insurer when required.

It should be shown on your renewal notice when it arrives.

As for protection, different insurers have different rules.

Yes, NCD "lives" on one vehicle/policy at a time. t'was ever thus.

Sept 23 - policy starts with zero
    Sept 24 - 1yr on renewal
    Sept 25 - 2yr on renewal
    Sept 26 - 3yr on renewal

And, yes, you should be able to protect that with most insurers. Whether it's worthwhile is a different question. Run the numbers. Many insurers tell you the %age discount they give.

It depends, some multi-car policies only generate one NCD so if you go to insure the vehicles separately in the future you still only have 1 NCD. Likewise if at any point in the three years you cancelled a policy and started a new one the part year is lost.

Also if you have switched insurers did you get the new business quote with the NCD declared or not, and if its one of those that check details, did they accept the proof of NCD?

In principle it should have 3 years to take to the next policy but there are various reasons why it may not. When you get your renewal quote it will definitively state what the NCD you will have to take into the next policy

I think it's usually once you get to 4 years you can protect it. I have done exactly the same as you, pretty much the same dates. My multi policy has come through my main car has protected no claims second car just shows 3 years but not protected.
