They offered to let you keep £150 of the £1,000 overpayment so they have not told you to repay the full amount. You rejected that offer so the full amount is now repayable.

You have three choices, pay in full, agree a payment plan, or face debt recovery action. Pick your preferred outcome of those three, keeping the money is not an option.

In civil common law, there is a concept of "unjust enrichment". If someone gives you money by mistake, you are expected to give it back.

There may be an exception if (1) you genuinely thought it was yours, (2) you've already spent it and (3) there's no way you can afford to give it back now. You would have to use it as a defence if they ever sue you for return of their money.

    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

It is highly likely the £150 has now been withdrawn, it was a pre ombudsman offer, they declined it and declined the ombudsman agreeing with the £150 so Eon are within their rights to withdraw that and we have seen that happen on here before when people have been difficult. The £150 was an attempt to avoid the hassle and cost of the ombudsman, that was refused, so it is almost certainly gone now and the full amount will be repayable.

Other than that they got a £1,000 interest free loan and the £1,000 they have to pay back will be worth less than the £1,000 they received due to inflation, so still a win.

    Hi

No, I had an import account and an export account.
The import account is closed and switched to another supplier now.

They haven't applied the £150. Nothing has happened to the account in the last 6 or so months. They haven't polled the meter and added any exports to the account, they haven't added any "goodwill gestures".

    No instructions from Eon Next.

They are not saying anything. I've had a letter, two texts and possibly an email, all auto generated asking me to pay. I have asked them three times now (twice via email and once over the phone) to provide a breakdown of the account as the amount left as debt doesn't match what the account has had since opening. I have tried to calculate the maths in several ways but can't get it to match what is currently left on the account.

    I started in June 2025.

Forgetting about the £1000, I have had one large-ish (£250) in October 2025, plus little dribs and drabs applied to my account, £40 here, £52 there - all different values. Some say reversed on the next bill, others remain. One appears twice, same value, so I suspect that's wrong.

That's why I have asked them for a complete breakdown of the account because it's all over the place.

I called them on Monday at around 2pm.
They said the "back office" would call back before 4pm. No phone call. I've had this twice now - promise of a call back and none appears.

You did well to get a 2-year SEG contract, @TractorFactor . But you don't have the complication of changing rates that apply to imported electricity, so it should be easy to work out how much you should have been paid. Working out what you actually were paid may be a bit more difficult; probably best to refer to your bank statements.

I think we were only ever paid the overpayment amount.

I'm sure I read somewhere it was ending in 2027 but looking on the bills, the export says it ended in 2026, so only one year.

Annoying as I've literally swapped my import to another company but it seems Eon might be cheaper by at least £60, if not more. Need to compare again when I have the electricity / gas import numbers.
