MerseyFlow Toll Penalty

I note there was a previous thread related to Merseyflow, that is now closed, which directed readers to Pepipoo (or FTLA, as it may now be) but given the great work you all do I thought it was worth sharing this quick thread for info as it's the first place I would look - and I saw some references to Mersey whilst reading that infuriating thread on Warburton Bridge!

My son recently drove over the Mersey Toll Road and didn't know it was a Toll/ didn't see the signs and received a PCN through the post today. He was about to pay when I convinced him to try giving them a call (as suggested by @Coupon-mad in the previous Mersey thread. He rang them and was told if he sets up a free Pay as you go account and then calls them back with the details, he will be able to pay the £2.40 crossing charge and they would drop the £25 penalty. He did that, registered some card details, in case he uses again and forgets, and they've wiped the penalty.

Good news for him, and a reasonable way to treat members of the public who make an innocent error. Precisely the opposite of what Peel and Excel are doing at Warburton (though if they only notify months after the event, an innocent motorist could be in for thousands in fines by the time they know there's an active toll)

Yes, I got a PCN from Merseyflow for forgetting the Mersey Gateway toll. I phoned them up and got a bit of a telling off but they agreed to cancel the PCN as it was a first offence and I agreed to pay the original £2 fee.

So definitely worth a try with them.

I fail to see how anyone can miss the signs they are huge and there are lots of them

At least 6 signs in either direction and he didn't see them? Should he be driving with that lack of awareness?

Not really the point I was making. Maybe he saw them and just forgot to pay, and when he was telling me about it he was just angry and felt it was unjust? Or I maybe that's what I assumed from his description and just embellished?

I posted to help others who might otherwise have just paid the fine… and to have a dig at Peel and Excel about Warburton.

This is a really useful comparison, thankyou. Settling for the toll is a fair approach and the polar opposite of what was cooked up by Excel Parking & Peel.
