EBAY - combined postage after buyer paid for first item

anyone had any experience of this please and advice on what to do?

last time i sold on Ebay was probably about 18 years ago and my god it has changed! I put some lots up for sale and one of them sold to a buyer lets call him Frank some didnt sell so i just deleted them (was going to just donate what didnt sell).

so I got paid and then frank contacted me about an unsold lot and asked if i would do a buy it now, so i did and he then paid for that lot too,

problem i had was I had created a label for all the auction lots so then the buy it now lot needed a label (and it weighed more than the auction lot) so i said to the buyer i would just use the buy it now lot to put both lots in as the postage would be covered by that one label, I made sure I messaged him clearly that both the buy it now and auction lot were in the same parcel with the single tracking number

so i have two tracking numbers for frank, one for his buy it now (both the auction and buy it now in one parcel) which is showing as delivered
the other lot is showing as label created and waiting dispatch (but it went into the buy it now parcel)

after faffing about for hours i couldnt change or amend the tracking number for the auction lot so i contacted an ebay agent that said it would automatically refund the buyer his postage and still send the money i made to my account.

Does anyone have experience of how long this takes? also is there a way i could have avoided this, as i have more things to sell but im thinking of just doing one lot a week so i dont have to combine postage as its doing my head it trying to work it out, thanks in advance…..and i am really trying to learn as i go along here!

with simple delivery you must use the labels provided , you can’t combine items.

If you don't use the label generated by simple delivery you must upload a new tracking number or the parcel will appear to have never been sent and you are likely to lose the sale funds. The difficulty you have is that you have a very limited window to use the same number as another parcel before ebay recognises it and refuses to accept it. If the buyer paid for postage they should automatically receive the refund, if you paid it is more complicated. What you have done has complicated matters greatly.
