All sorted now thanks

I'm due to go to Peru in 4 weeks, but yesterday my wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer and now waiting for CT scans etc. There is no way I can go away for 3 weeks while this is going on. My insurance is with staysure, would I be able to claim, My wife was not going on the holiday, it was a solo trip.. I've tried looking at the small print in the policy but can not seem to find anything. So far I've not done anything, my head is in a mess.

Most insurers should cover cancellation in such circumstances but if you can't find the relevant terms in the policy then you'll probably need to phone them.

You may want to speak to the holiday provider first to see if you can postpone the trip - that will save you the excess costs.

If you do go down the insurance route it will depend on the exact policy you've bought, but the vast majority of policies cover cancellation due to the illness of a close relative or spouse. The below is from the StaySure general T&Cs, but you'd need to call them and discuss it to be certain:

    What is covered
Section 1 Cancellation. We pay up to the limit of cover for:
your non-refundable travel and accommodation costs. This means deposits and amounts you’ve paid or you’re contracted to pay.
    pre-paid excursions.
    pre-paid kennel or cattery fees.
that you can’t use because you’re forced to cancel your trip for a reason listed below.
    a) unforeseen illness, injury or, death of:
    – you; or
    – a close relative; or
    – travelling companion; or
    – any person you have arranged to stay with
    during the trip.

For the purposes of the policy, a close relative is:

Close relative(s): The following persons only:
    • the person that you live with, in a relationship for at least 6 months at the same address, whether married or cohabiting (as if husband and wife) regardless of gender.
    • your children (including step, fostered or adopted children), grandchildren, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, parents-in-law, sons/daughtersin-law and brothers/sisters-in-law.

Speak to the travel agency, depending on the terms and conditions of the holiday you may be able to move it however you may be liable for any increase in costs. Usually at this point you are in 100% cancellation fees, so should you cancel then you will not be given a refund. Hence the suggestion you may be able to move the holiday.

You insurance company will tell you quickly if they will cover this, so there is no harm in asking.

I had the same situation - my wife's diagnosis was 1 week before I needed to travel.

A needed a letter from my doctor but the process was fine.

Hope your wife's treatment goes well . A mastectomy then gruelling chemo/ radiotherapy back in 2019 throughout covid. Bounced back last year.

Need to read your policybook and what cancellation cover you have, most policies will cover cancelling for an immediate family member being taken seriously ill as long as they have no history of a similar condition

The OP really needs to speak with Staysure direct.
