Will I be covered?
I took out annual travel insurance (with cover for pre existing conditions as i had recently had surgery) for myself and my husband on 5th September 2025, therefore it will expire 5th September 2026.
I have booked and paid for our holiday whilst insured however, we won't be going on holiday until 17th October 2026.
The renewal with existing company is ridiculous, £85 more than last year even though there has now been a further year's recovery with no more health problems.
I can get a new annual policy for much less with another provider with the same cover as before.
My question is as I have paid already for all parts of the holiday whilst covered by insurance, when should I start the new insurance from? The day the old policy runs out or the day I will go on holiday?
Would the old policy cover still be valid for flights etc if i travel after it has expired?
Do i therefore only need to start new policy in time for travelling incase of any issues whilst on holiday?
Hopefully that makes sense!

you need to read the old policies terms, some more budget providers wont cover any holiday that is to occur after the term of the policy, others will as long as the event that prevents you from travelling occurs during the period of cover (though some may require the renewal to occur).
If you set it to the date of travel then you will have no cover between the 5 Sep and 17 Oct if anything were to happen to you or those close to you on those dates.1 -
You need the new policy to start as soon as your current one expires to have continuous cover.

You first need to confirm that should you need to cancel the October holiday before 5September that you will be covered by your existing policy.
Some policies state that they only cover holidays that happen during the period of policy cover. Such a policy would not cover cancelling the October holiday , for any reason.
If your policy covers the holiday up to 5 September, then your new policy should start when your existing one ends.
If it does not cover the October holiday then you need to take out a new policy now.1 -
Thanks everyone 😊

Is your annual policy through a packaged bank account, rather than one of the specialist providers ?
If not - it might be worth investigating what sort of deal they could offer.
We are with Nationwide as part of their FlexPlus account - £18 monthly fee, joint customer worldwide cover and no age limit - further quotes are based entirely on individual medical conditions.
Cover is provided by Aviva - and you can call them for a quote before considering applying for the bank account - so no prior commitment. (Tel. 0800 0512 532)
I recommended this to a friend some months ago and they were quoted around half of what their other provider was asking for. He was well chuffed !!!
