Travel insurance renewal or not

I have an active policy that runs out in December 2026. We have no plans to travel during 2027 but have paid a deposit on a cruise for March 2028. Both the wife and I have pre existing conditions and pay £700+ for the policy. Should I renew knowing that we are not travelling in 2027 and renew again in 2028 when we go or not. I know the cruise is still 20 months away.

Martin always says as soon as you book get insurance to cover you between now and when you go.

Personally I wouldn't pay for insurance until it was time to pay the balance for the cruise. It depends whether you can afford to lose the deposit if you have to cancel

What is the financial commitment on the cruise so far? Do you know when it changes?

The issue of being uninsured is if one of you were to fall ill whilst uninsured then you have lost the holiday and have no come back. Now if you are only on the hook for £500 now until 6 months before you sail then its likely not worth paying £700 to insure it however if that goes up to £5,000 when you are 6 months out then its probably worth insuring just before that happens

As above, there is no need.

You will be paying £700 to cover a cruise deposit, but as most insurance only covers trips up until 12 months in advance this won't be in place until March 2027.

You may find your current policy does not cover your March 28 cruise due to being in 2028.

It may be difficult to get insurance at present for a cruise on March 28.

Yiu need to do your research into policies.

Hi thank you for the advice, we have paid £5k deposit but next year will need to book flights so I think I will take out a new policy then. I know from experience that a lot of companies will not insure us if we are not travelling within 3 months.

If I had paid a £5K deposit, I would be looking to insure it, as anything can happen between now and then. Perhaps a specialist insurer could cover that far ahead.
