GymGroup - can't access my local gym.

In March 2026 I paid for a 9 month student Gym Group membership. This gives me access to my university gym (in this case in Southampton) and a local gym.

Recentlty, I went to add a second gym , one of the local branches. Only to find an app message saying I can't add another gym right now because of an apparent software upgrade. I approached the branch on Instagram and they say there is nothing they can do about it until the software upgrade is complete on the 17th August.

I find this wholly unacceptable, with no advance warning of this, which has effectivly left me without a gym for two weeks. I've paid an outright lump sum for 9 months of gym membership but for 2 weeks of those 9 months I can't access a gym.

What are my rights here? If I buy a tempoary one month membership, can I then ask The Gym Group to pay it? As part of my package a second gym is included yet I can't actually access it.

It depends on exactly what specific T&Cs you signed up to back in March.

For example, GymGroup's current website says with regard to student memberships:

Terms, conditions and exclusions:

Please note that some of our gyms are excluded from being added as a secondary access gym. If you would like to make one of these gyms included in your membership you must make that gym your home gym and purchase your 6 month student membership from that gym specifically.

Does that term apply to your membership? Only you can see what you agreed to. None of us can see that.

At most the remedy would be to add 2 weeks membership to the end of the 9 months.

I can't see how you've been left without access to a gym unless there's more you haven't told us, you can still access the university gym and the first local one that you signed up to. If you ask nicely they might give you a week or two extra at the end of the 9 months but I doubt if they have to.

I think that you have to add the "a local gym" after you've signed up. i.e. you get your university gym and an empty slot that you can assign to one local gym of your choice. It was when OP went to do this that they found they couldn't due to the app upgrade - essentially preventing them from making use of a feature they'd paid for.
