Pokemon collections worth money
Hello all, hoping for a bit of advice please. Posting on behalf of a family member. He's always been quite an avid collector of things, a bit of a hoarder. He bought some pokemon cards in the late 90s which we have now since found out they are worth a lot of money (had them valued). We are talking 10s of 1000s. He is retired and now would like to sell them. Firstly, what happens with tax please? Would he have to pay anything? He is not a business or dealer, just a personal collection. It all seems a bit confusing now, so any help would be appreciated.
Secondly, if anyone knows of any sort of specialist place to sell them which might see a better amount paid for them, please let me know.
This is all new to us and a bit scary, so appreciate any advice. TIA

I would not risk an online auction site, especially if they are new to the system. EBay is flooded with fakes, genuine ones run the risk of being overlooked, or perhaps bought and then declared fake by a dodgy buyer.
Find a local bricks and mortar auction house, especially one with an online presence , many use 3 rd party sites line easylive auctions, and you could search on there by area to find one near you and approach them about selling the collection.

as soolin says, a real auction house would be best.

There are quite a lot of dealers in them about. No idea of any but someone may come along here with details. As above though try some auction houses first, I haven't seen any who specialise but there will be.
On tax the only concern should be capital gains if it comes into several thousand. It may be worth getting advice on that, even if it's just a quick call to HMRC.

My local auction house sell Pokemon cards every week.
Look at the Collectables auctions.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.1 -
one tool i would recommend, would be google ai. If you upload some photos of your pokemon cards and ask google the value or which ones are rare. It will tell you.
google ai is great. It can even identify fakes / copies.
I’ve been using Google ai quite a bit to research some of my items / give me the value etc.0 -
Stanley Gibbons operate in this market if you’re looking for a big name.

Thanks all, so leaning towards a physical auction house over online only. I guess they would verify them too. What about through a trading shop? Any thoughts on those? Cheers all.

Trading shop(?) as in a shop/dealer? Depends if you want quick money.
Dealers tend to offer a lot less than half the value of an item.In my experience, selling to a shop/dealer is not a fun experience. I wouldn’t recommend it.
