The efficiency of a hob is the measure by which it converts electrical energy into heat.
The efficiency by which that heat passes into the food is rather diffferent and will depend on variables such as the ambient temperature, the thermal efficiency of the cooking pot, etc etc.

  • Add to this that gas hobs are easier to use (mostly because they change temperature immediately which electric doesn't)

Actually, that's not true if you go for an electric induction hob...they are just as controllable as gas....

Going back to the original post (a long time ago) an electric cooker costs about 2.5 times as much to run, based on the difference in kWh price. However an electric cooker is 100% efficient, a gas cooker is not.
As to which is nicer/better-that's an entirely different question.

Of course you need to take into account how much of the heat generated by the burning of the gas is lost around the side of the pans...an effect that doesn't happen with electric (especially induction ones).
  • I think it depends...

sometimes it is gas but can be electric

    hope that helps.
As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.
  • I think food cooks better on gas. As for cost it's probably much of a muchness these days. 20 yrs ago I would have said gas was cheaper but I am really not sure anymore if that's still true.
    1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31
    10 & 20p: misc savings £2.70
    50p: Christmas presents £3.50
    £2: holidays £2.00
  • Also having a gas oven on can warm your kitchen quite considerably I find.

I think you'll find the same effect with an electric oven too.
And gas is not 'much of a muchness'. It's 250% cheaper per kWh.

would not be seen dead with a gas oven

electric fan ovens take way ( less time to cook )

and cook more evenly due to the fan

gas hobs and electric fan ovens have been used in professional kitchens for decades

i use a gas kettle to make tea it drastically reduces my bills

electric ovens are probably a bit dearer than gas

The question was; which is cheaper?
Not which is faster, more efficient, looks nicer in the kitchen etc.

  • hi, i don't have gas, but was talking with regards to electric as in ceramic halogen and induction (answer 25 on this thread), but i think it has been answered and i believe induction is more efficient (costwise), than the ceramic halogen, thanks to everyone for answering. Amazing how we all have such strong feelings about gas and electric.
