I meant a free guarantee; anyone can buy an extended guarantee.

10 year parts guarantee is free as long as you register the purchase.
But, you pay for labour and it must be repaired by a hotline engineer.

The costs of parts for a manufacturer are very small beer compared to the labour costs for the call out which a customer pays.

A machine in a four-person household that has/had babies/toddlers will likely have had a lot of use in four years. A budget brand might be reasonably expected to last only that long with a high level of use. My machines have always lasted ages since my sons grew up. I also use the minimum spin speed necessary, dependent upon the weather. The difference in dryness between 900rpm (where I usually run the machine unless it's a damp winter and I'm going to need to use the tumble dryer) and 1400rpm is minimal and in these hot summer months I dial the spin speed right back to 500rpm. Puts a lot less stress through the drive belt, bearings, motor, etc.

I agree. Also can depend on the programme(s) used. My WM has 120 and 180 minute programmes (neither of which I've used) and if OP uses such programmes frequently, the WM will wear out far quicker than if 80 min programmes are used
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
As the OP considered how much a new one would cost. I just went out and bought a new one from John Lewis who sell at same price as Currys and Argos.

Thanks everyone.
we only use the short cycles and minimum spin for the load but I appreciate it is probably run quite often. We purchased via prestige privilege club via nhs discounts and it was then direct from hotpoint. I’m still confused who then counts as the retailer but I’ll look into it further.
I'm following up with Hotpoint as I have complaints about their customer service process but think we will end up getting a new machine depending how quickly an engineer can come out to have a look at it and then going back to the retailer afterwards1 -
In terms of identifying the retailer, whose name is on the receipt and who shows as the payee on your bank/card statement?

My guess is broken drum spider but I see we are in consumer rights not DIY.
