Sorry it wasn't obvious to me that you meant it as a bluff, it may well not have been obvious to the OP either (or it may have been, who knows).

Some merchants may fold, some may call the bluff. I think if it is the strategy, then do it when formal discussion reaches a stalemate, as some merchants may not take kindly to being threatened like that, particularly where they are aware of their statutory obligations.

Your username (though they mistook that as the 'thread heading'). Obviously unrelated in your case as I can see you made your account several decades ago, however as you're probably aware it's very common for aggrieved first time posters to come to this forum with a particular issue and name themselves things like eontrash, dontusesky, etc, which usually gives a hint to the offending company!

I have had an email back and they said as the service I used is not "a guaranteed service" there is nothing they can do in respect of a fee refund.

It's always "amusing" when companies say this - because very obviously there is something they could do. There are many things they could do. There is nothing at all preventing them from refunding the postage. There is nothing preventing them refunding the whole purchase price and giving you another £100 on top. They could have the CEO drive round to your house and hand over the refund in cash whilst on his knees begging for forgiveness. All these things, and more, are possible.

What they actually mean is "We don't want to, and we think we can get away with not doing it"
