I've retired and needed something to do, so decided without a great deal of enthusiasm to try growing veg. I've taken to it, and find it much more enjoyable than I expected. It certainly hasn't been money-saving to date. We already had a lot of tools, but needed to buy quite a lot of stuff. That may settle down, but I'm sure it will never be eliminated.
Lettuce and potatoes have been the greatest success to date. We usually buy two bags of washed lettuce during our weekly shop, and often need a top-up during the week. We haven't bought any for about 8 weeks. Some of our potatoes are still growing, but we've got enough already to see us through the rest of the year.
Quality is impressive - taste is much better than shop bought stuff. It's very much a hobby though, not a financial exercise.
