Kettle Randomly Turning Itself Off

We have a lot of ironing, and pretty much every iron we have had goes kaput ( usually leak) within two years.

So we bought one with a two year warranty about 10 years ago and have not paid for a new one since. We just take them back to the shop when it inevitably breaks within two years and they swop it for a new one. Last time the same model was £20 cheaper than previously, so we bought £20 of other things to make it up.

You're lucky to keep getting a new one. Normally, a 2 year warranty covers you for 2 years of use, so if the first one breaks down you get a new one which is covered for the 2 year period from the date of the original sale, not from when the replacement was given.

Also worth checking the base around the electrical contacts for a physical/mechanical switch, a small plastic protruderance that's pushed in when the kettle is sat firmly on the base, and pops out - and trips the power switch - when t'kettle is lifted.

If the kettle isn't sitting completely flat on its base, or if this button is bent or distorted, the kettle's main switch may only be partially held 'on'.

Check this and how snugly the kettle sits, part fill it, turn it on, and gently rotate/slightly wobble the kettle. Does it stay on, or is it far too sensitive?

I was not aware of that. We just take them back to Robert Dyas and they give us a new one with a new warranty.

That's a really good deal you have. In theory this could go on indefinitely. When you think about it, buying an iron with a 2 year warranty means you get at least 2 years of service from it. If it goes after 1 year, and the free replacement lasts for 18months you've had 2.5years use of it so they normally say that you've had over 2 years from it for the price of one iron, which seems quite reasonable to me.

I have found the same - warranty doesn’t keep rolling over to replaced products just lasts for the original time period.

Thanks, I've found a little switch within the plastic central part of the base which must be the part you described. It pushes in and springs out readily when I poke it with a cocktail stick, so I think that is OK. It looks as if it is something a bit more terminal unfortunately.

I've found an old kettle in the loft that seems to be working fine, so tea and coffee can flow freely and life can carry on. Thanks again to everyone who kindly added to the discussion!

Does it boil (and not cut out) with the lid open? You'll need to be careful and supervise it from boiling dry and filling your home with steam, but if it doesn't cut out, I'd say the vapour switch it faulty.

These days we usually buy small electricals such as kettles and toasters from either Aldi or Lidl, you get a 3 year warranty, keep the receipt safe unless you have on-line receipts. These items are fairly basic, usually cost around £12-£15, and have mainly lasted much longer than 3 years. We did have one kettle that leaked from new, it was replaced without question.

We abandoned our original stainless steel kettle, a wedding present some 57 years back, in favour of one that switches off when it has boiled, but we still have it in a cupboard and it does still work. Unfortunately my OH likes to try to fix things, so we also have a few non working kettles that he is hoarding. I know they will NEVER get fixed!!

I've got two Dualit items, both work perfectly but I know they have a repair service. I think it would be an idea if the OP spoke to Dualit and it may just be a simple fix. They also have a trouble shooting guide on their website. Their products are well built but like with every brand some will fail.
