Normandy and war graves.

If you know what regiment and battalion he was in its generally possible to find out where he landed and the route they took. I followed my grandfather's route a few years back but I was driving.

The Normandy coast generally takes longer to traverse than it looks on a map, and there is lots to see. The places others have mentioned like the American Cemetery and one of my favourites the German Battery at Longues-sur-mer well worth a visit.

The relevant Regimental Association should be able to help.

Possible problem is that so many of the regiments etc. that were in the Order of Battle then have disbanded or been amalgamated etc.

I have been to both Normandy (2024) and the Western Front (2023) with Leger Holidays. On each occasion the tour guides were excellent but the Ibis hotels whilst clean were basic, with very limited space in the rooms and tiny bars, and on the Normandy tour we were based on some sort of industrial estate outside the city centre with no suggestions as to how to get in there in the evening. The restaurants at both hotels were very limited. Bus drivers on both occasions were rude.

Because the tour guides were so good and the itineraries excellent and what I wanted, I would book again with Leger but would pay more to upgrade to a more expensive coach (which they offer) if it is clear that the hotel used is not one of the Ibis chain. I believe that usually you get a better hotel if you upgrade coach wise. The website usually makes it clear which hotel you are staying at. It is the Ibis hotels that are so basic.

We found it difficult to identify coach companies that went where we wanted, and that offered good guides so it is a compromise.

Obviously, an upgrade is an option but I got the impression (maybe wrongly) that @jeff_chandler was travelling alone in which case an Ibis room would be perfectly OK.

We've used them all over France and find them great VFM and good breakfasts, similar to Premier Inn . I can understand that one out of town would be restrictive as the dinners are basic but in a town we always go out, look around and choose a restaurant.

The Ibis in the centre of Caen is excellent and has a decent bar too with plenty of good restaurants in easy walking distance.

The accommodation on our Leger trip was fine, basic but more than acceptable.
