No landline phone and financial institutions

Just wondering if no longer having a landline is likely to cause problems with applications for accounts where the landline is a starred, must be submitted box.

Has anyone without a landline had problems?

Also if you’ve gone landline free have you contacted all existing institutions you have accounts with? That could be a very long day!

I don’t want to cause problems and I don’t think any institution has ever tried to call me on a landline but I have that residual doubt about giving up the line. Thanks

Only institution that I had any trouble shifting from my landline was the local Health Authority.

If you are not getting calls on that line then I wouldn't be too bothered, maybe make sure the important contacts (near relatives/friends/banks/insurance companies) have your alternative contact details.

I dropped mine 18 months ago because I was getting more promotional and scam calls on it than useful calls (in my area the scammers just seem to pick numbers at random and use a computer-generated caller which emulates a person). I didn't put any great effort into informing anyone - just gradually updated my personal info on all of the company websites as and when I got round to it. It was no problem at all.

Not seen any ask for "landline" but many ask for "home" which is my mobile when I am at home !

No problems here either, we gave up our landline about 3 years back.

Thanks everyone, very reassuring. I’d been quite happy until faced with a form online last night that wouldn’t accept a mobile number in the home phone box (presumably some check decided an 07 prefix couldn’t be a home number) so I started to worry that might be a general problem. Just wanted to be sure I wasn’t creating an ongoing difficulty especially with banking/savings which are the only places that have asked for both home and mobile recently. Clearly from next year on there may be many more without landline/home phones so it will have to become less of an issue.

Wouldn't accept a mobile number in the Home Phone box AND was a mandatory field?

Did you try the +447nnn format?

    Care to name the website?

Same as others, had no landline (or broadband) for 5 years, never found any issue with any provider accepting only 07 mobile numbers

Sometimes they'll want an alternative number, but I think these fields are usually optional, or you could just repeat the number (or use partner's etc).

A bigger issue is to make sure you have some sort of backup, it seems some people are totally reliant on their mobile for everything and their world falls apart if they lose it or it breaks!

You could get a VOIP service, I've used Sipgate for about 6 years since we stopped using our physical landline, you get a local geographic number but can use it anywhere there's internet (inc abroad). Costs hardly anything, just pay for calls which we rarely make, a tenner topup lasts us a few years, and you get stuff like voicemail emailed to you and missed call emails etc. And not had a single spam call on it, compared to the physical landline where we got several a week.
