At 25, if I was found out to hold a Saga account the p*sstaking would be merciless 😄

Good grief, you should change your friends from the ageist and financially illiterate bunch they appear to be.

The p*sstaking down the pub is one thing. Self-imposed quasi-officially becoming old is another thing. Of course it's nonsense but that's what makes being human interesting.

I don't think I could live without banter in my life. Anyway, I'd hardly consider my 25-year old self a victim of ageism if someone asked me where I'd left my cardigan, or offered to read the menu out for me in case I didn't have my reading glasses.

I'm in the over 60 age group and would not have opened one simply because back then everything was high street based. Every account I ever held back then (and I did move funds to better accounts) albeit probably only once or twice a year whereas now you with internet you could substitute year for week, were mainstream building societies. Woolwich, Nationwide and Gateway are the three that spring to mind.

The whole high street now would have to consist of nothing other than banks/building societies for me to behave like I did back then with the number of accounts I juggle now.

At 25 the last place id be putting my money would be a 4.5% easy access account. I was looking for bigger returns and putting my money into property & business ideas not a savings account.

Good point! Makes it even more fun to think how high the rate would have to be before you walked into a branch.

To those who said the question is irrelevant because they would invest and not save at that age… not quite the point of the thread but the panel thanks you for your comments.

I wouldn't have opened one, at 25 I was too busy paying lumps off my mortgage to be saving.

At 35 I'd have considered Saga, if they paid a decent rate and I was eligible.

Nothing to do with age or perceptions.

If it's not the point of the question then....what is ?

The question was very straightforward and if people invested their money instead of saving in an EA account that's a totally legitimate answer.

Saga did not exist when I was 25, so I could not have opened an account with them. In 1975, the UK base rate fluctuated throughout the year but generally stayed in the double digits, ranging from a low of 9.92% in the spring to a high of 11.67% in the fourth quarter. I would not have even considered a savings account paying 4.5%.
