Apart from fees from retailers, credit cards have never made a penny out of me in over 30 years. I only take O% purchases or fee free BT cards.

Currently have an M&S card maxed out and they even gave me £35 to open it. Last HSBC card they gave me £26 cashback. Currently have 5 credit cards on the go but can be as high as 7. Generally the only time I get a knock back is on card 7 or 8.

I wonder if the OP went through an eligibility checker flagged up by one of the popular online money websites ?

I tried that for one of the big name credit card providers some months ago - rejected - then went via their direct website, application approved immediately with a very decent credit limit.

They will make plenty of money from merchant fees, if it's a bog standard account then it costs pennies to print a card, couple of quid or whatever to post it every couple of years

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
