Qrendi, I would hire a car for the few days, they drive on the same side as the uk .. its been a few years since I visited but public transport form places some of the more remote places was scarce after 18:00 ish ..

Tony the problem with hiring a car is parking, they have parking wardens who don't hesitate to tow a car away, you don't want that hassle.

If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.1 -
The answer for a first visit is not to stay somewhere remote. If you do you'll end up spending your holiday driving. Stay centrally in Valletta or similar so there's lots to do in the vicinity of your hotel, and public transport is easy.
