Yes my fault. Ordered something online.

Delivery address correct house no and street name, but incorrect town and postcode. Courier took a guess and delivered it to and invalid street address.

Vendor is saying tough luck, I'm saying they should have returned it as invalid address?

Example - Old address:-

10 dog street, dogtown, DO10 1DG

New address:-

25 cat street, catland, CA1 5CT

I put delivery address as:-

25 cat street, dogtown, DO10 1DG (which does not exist - there is no cat street in dogtown)

They delivered it to:-

25 dog street, dogtown, DO10 1DG. (so basically took a guess that postcode was correct but nothing else)

I am not surprised they got confused.

You admitted it was your fault.

How does a parcel/letter go to wrong address if someone fills in the details online as I am sure they have to match up before proceeding.

How would the vendor know it was an invalid address, unless the wrongful recipient has returned it? There are some addresses that don't exist on a system, particularly when new streets are built, or where houses are added to a street. It sometimes takes time before they appear on various systems.

From a practical perspective, since you know the address it was delivered to, can't you visit and ask for the parcel?

I know this doesn’t say RM but when I started high level sales online using RM I was told all I needed as a return address (this was the old days with handwritten addresses and stamps) was my postcode and house number, no need even of street as the postcode designated the sorting area for delivery and the house number should be unique to that post code. So it would be something like 25/CA1 5CT.

In answer to your specific query I think you might struggle to get a courier to admit liability and recompense you, the seller is not at fault as they used the address given - so it would only be the courier you can persue. It is likely the courier was given parcels for postcodes in their delivery area and just used the house number .

Do you have absolute proof of where it was delivered ? if so approach the householder carefully and ask them if they have it. Anyone on here savvy with the wrong address scam is unlikely to hand it over to you but you might persuade them to return it to the sender. You can also try the courier , but they rarely answer simple queries, let alone completed ones.

The OP has no contract with the courier. The seller does and could well be able to claim for the lost parcel (unless it it returned to them).

However, given that the OP provided wrong information (and admits that) it is hard to see how they could have a legal claim against the seller.

I am sure some of the regulars on here will take a different view!

i’m not sure why you expect the vendor to check whether you address exists or not.

It might flag off if they put the postcode in and choose the address from a drop down menu but if you were able to put your address in without going through process then he will just use what you have put.

That assumes they even read the street address, the post code would have got it into a local courier van, from there the courier only needs to see the house number. It was on a van, courier has literally seconds to deliver , they’re in the correct post code area and they just look for the house number. Half the time in places I’ve visited I can’t even see a street name, the road above us for example is long, the street name board was vandalised some time ago and is nearly ineligible , a few roads further back the road name is almost hidden by an overgrown hedge. I only know those street names as I live locally, a courier driving past in a van wouldn’t stand a chance.

I admit my suggestion of going to the courier was chancy, I actually said I thought it might fail at first hurdle anyway as couriers are not noted for responding to any sort of messages or queries.

The courier might know, but it's not certain that they would know. They typically use the postcode and number combination, which is what they've done here.

I don't see that you have a strong case for anything from the retailer. At best there's shared blame.

Why not write to the address it was delivered to, asking them to send it to you and you'll reimburse them?
