What do you mean tied to a monopoly, if you don’t want to use BT or EE , don’t , that’s not a monopoly BTW , a monopoly is if you don’t have a choice at all , you can chose between dozens of providers so use someone else , I don’t know where you are looking but Sky , Talk Talk , Vodafone and Zen all offer telephony with broadband, ( this is not the entire list , there are others ) so it’s wrong to say you can only chose BT or EE .
Plusnet are getting out of the telephone business so you can’t stay with Plusnet even if you wanted to , so if you need a telephone service, this is a perfect opportunity, leave Plusnet , ignore BT and EE and join someone else entirely, that way you don’t have to use the companies you incorrectly call a monopoly.
If you mean you don’t have a choice but to use an Openreach based provider because no other network is available, who’s fault is that ?

Thank you iniltous. I suspected I was being given a bum steer by EE etc. All the comparison sites generally compare "broadband and mobile". as My mother does not use a mobile they are not of any use. I went straight to Vodaphone directly and found what I was looking for. Now I can get some alternative quotes.

You were not given a bum steer by EE really , Plusnet are not offering telephony anymore , for existing Plusnet telephony customers the simplest solution is to accept their offer and let them move you to EE , this doesn’t increase cost over what you currently pay PN (so basically EE charge the same as what PN were charging ) or the length of contract minimum term , so you don’t start a new minimum term with EE , it’s the same date as you had with PN , so it’s unclear why that caused you strife .
Joining VF is reasonable thing to do , but that will mean a new longer minimum term as you are a new VF customer, they may be a little cheaper than either the existing Plusnet cost or the EE cost once you were out of the PN contract length (assuming you were still inside a minimum term with PN that EE were honouring) , but I’m not sure what your problem with the PN to EE offer was, it’s a pretty good one TBH , no increase in price or contract length, it’s as close to staying with PN as possible, the only difference the router is an EE one and the phone connection is on the router , anyway hopefully it goes smoothly , you do realise the phone will still move to the router , albeit a VF router not an EE one .
