Accidentally paid far too much because of badly maintained payment machine!

. . .This morning my friend and I parked in the P & D car–park opposite the road from Walsall Manor with the intention of buying an hour's parking for which the currently advertised tariff (see pics) is £1.80

. . . Unfortunately because of the very poor state of the payment machine's keypad selection buttons, it defaulted (perhaps purposely!) to the maximum daily limit of 24h for which a tariff of £15 applies!

. . .I couldn't work out what or where to press to cancel the transaction and start again and the thing helped itself to £15 from my Halifax!

. . .This was NOT a registration mis–key, nor am I trying to resolve a PCN, I simply paid far too much because of the poor state of the operator's payment machine!

. . .Signage (see pictures) say the car–park is ANPR monitored, if that's the case their ANPR record will show that we left within the hour, for which only £1.80 was payable!

. . .Have I got any chance of getting a part refund/credit of the £13.20 back from the Car Park Operator please?

Can't help with this at all. But I was visiting Manor as a visitor recently for a spell.

If you can bear a short walk, roadside parking is available free of charge in Bridgeman Street and some of the smaller streets off it, on Sundays and later in the days during the week.

    £15 covers 5 days.

If paying cash it also says over payment accepted no change given!

Do a bank chargeback (or a "dispute" as some call it).

Quite often you receive the refund immediately and you keep it if the other side fails to respond to the dispute. Your photos of their shoddy setup are perfect.

I managed to get £50 back off Travelodge doing this.

I've not done a chargeback but if you get the full £15 back you've then not paid for parking so they might pursue you.

Equally, I suspect technically their T&Cs will state no refunds for parking that isn't used - and who's to say you didn't deliberately pay £15 but your plans subsequently changed (I know they didn't - I'm just saying).

Simplest and best route, a nice polite email to the parking company saying the machine was in a poor state and you didn't realise it was going to charge £15 and could they please refund the difference as you only intended to stay for 1hour and the fact you're not asking for the absolutely cheapest 30min tariff gives an indication you're being honest (and would match ANPR if they checked).

Ask nicely… see what they say

Does any Member actually know who runs this car park? – there's one very prominent phone numer on signage further down, but that's a Windows and Blinds Advertiser that's apparently nothing to do with them and nothing on their badly maintained P & D machinę either!

. . .They have another car park on the corner of Station Road that was a gravel surface last time I used It a few years ago but I paid cash then so didn't get caught out!

In the meantime I've tried "Dispute This Transaction" from my Halifax but It keeps shunting me back and forward between the "Dispute A Transaction!" and "Download Our App!" – I already have their stupid app!

as mentioned by @j2009 , if you are doing a charge back do a partial charge back. You don’t want the parking company to come after you for disputing the £1.80 you planned to pay.

While many will disagree with me on this and the question I have is - if you decide to charge back and the parking company decides to pursue this further, is the effort and time you will put in be more than the £15? If so, is it worth the hassle?

    ultimately it is your call…

I'd eat my hat if you received a court claim for £13.20 😆

You may find Halifax insist you try and dispute it with the parking co first, so you may need to send them an email. No need to be nice, because they won't give you the money. Just be neutral. You only want their go away email for your chargeback.
