Mystery electricity use

Some modern IHDs do apparently report the two rates - but my old IHD doesn't.
A quick google also suggests the IHD3 doesn't - which is a pain.
It will show the current meter live SC and the unit rates I suspect at the appropriate times.
(That can throw the maths a bit as often takes 1-2 days to update these when the cap changes or on change of supplier etc)
If you dont want to read the physical meter - you can work out the peak and off peak use from the total energy / total cost and the 3 prices - SC / unit rates - by simple algebraic substitution.
But if want to repeat regularly - you'd likely be best to put the current 3 costs (SC, OP and P rates) and the days/week/months total cost and total energy into a spreadsheet (or as I do Octave script files).

7am 0.72 KWH and the cost was showing as 53p.
If that was before you put your immersion heater on, it suggests you have a background load (fridge, freezer, router, anything else that's on standby) of about 100 watts. 100 watts x 7 hours = 0.7kWh.
That's quite normal.
I put the immersion heater on about 7am for 15 minutes which costs about 12p.
Do you know your E7 times accurately? 7am is relatively late (although we're on BST now, so it's only 0600 GMT) and it's possible you're too late for the cheap rate period.
Have you checked?

Thanks again for the replies.
I feel better now knowing why the cost is what it is when I get up in the morning.
I am going to look into getting an IHD that shows the day and night rate.
I do not know my E7 times with EDF, I always assumed it was 12 midnight until 7am but I could be wrong about that.
My monthly bills that are sent via email do show the daytime and nighttime useage.

Your Chameleon IHD3 should give you a 60 minute countdown to the exact peak and off peak tariff times and show you the current tariff price.

How often do you want to see the day / night split ?
If just daily and can wait to following day or so - then chances are the suppliers portal or mobile app will have the info you want - and for free.
And for those who maybe have fought this issue before, and maybe before the OP spends £40+ on one of the third party IHDs - does anyone know if it's just an IHD issue - or does the meter firmware also have to support providing the e7 registers etc separately ?
