As several posters have pointed out it seems to vary between card providers. Not sure why you think I'm keeping secrets, what would be the point? I already mentioned two of the card providers I have cards with, see https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/82058422/#Comment_82058422

Just set DD to pay balance, then it automatically takes correct amount. Barclaycard count refunds as payments, so DD ends up being statement balance less the refund (providing it goes through in time)
